Creek & Magellan investigate the apparently impossible suicide of a female illusionist, who daughter happens to be a former flame of Creek's, and whose twin sister was killed fifteen years previously. But there is another lateral mind at work this time, in the form of swashbuckling Det Insp Gideon Pryke.

A housekeeper's assistant working for a celebrated crime writer becomes convinced she is losing her mind following a series of bizarre occurrences in his house. As master of illusion Jonathan and his intrepid sidekick Joey Ross puzzle over the strange events, they realise the mysterious death of a former resident in 1889, who apparently fell victim to the supernatural powers of his Egyptian employee, could hold the key.

Joey Ross draws Jonathan into a complex case involving a secret society, seemingly supernatural events at a girls' boarding school, and the miraculous disappearance of a body.

The stepdaughter of horror film director Nathan Clore contacts Jonathan to help her find the answer to the mysterious deaths of her mother and two sisters years earlier. Her stepfather was going to reveal the secret to her, but suffered a stroke and is unable to communicate. She believes the answer lies within Daemons' Roost, her stepfather's mansion, formerly owned by notorious 19th century sorcerer Jacob Surtees. As Jonathan and Polly investigate, the sorcerer apparently returns from the grave and kills the woman's husband. With help from the local vicar, together they uncover a tale of murderous revenge. Meanwhile Jonathan is stalked by an adversary from a previous case who also has revenge on his mind.
